Antidepressant Drugs: Types, Effects and Developments
Antidepressant Drugs: Types, Effects and Developments Introduction: Depression is one of the parts of mental disorder which is affecting millions of people worldwide. [6] The logical analytical approach used in clinical and forensic toxicology for the identification of one or more Antidepressant Drugs as a cause of intoxication is largely based on both simple and fast screening methods which cover their extraction and identification including detection of their possible metabolites is been tried to reviewed. Antidepressant: Types Functions Antidepressant drugs cover many varieties of drugs having different modes of actions like [16] etc. Adverse effects Antidepressants are supposed to increase the risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in children accompanying other disorders like depressive and psychiatric disorders. [17] [18] [19] The European Medicines Agency showed warning on the use of Antidepressants which might be increased the risk of suicidal behavior in children and adolescents. [31] TCAs and MAOIs can produce similar kind of side effects like Tachycardia, blurred vision, urinary retention, cardiovascular effects , hypotension, respiratory depression, coma etc. [4] Thus, these drugs may be responsible for the fatality and intoxication and can produce severe effects. Also their growing rate all over the world may show threatening effects which is the matter of global concern. Thus, its increasing prescription rate and adverse effects resulting in a growing interest for determination methods in the Clinical and Forensic field. Biological Samples use for the Screening of Antidepressant Drugs Biological samples are the basic requirement of Forensic and Clinical Toxicology as it solve several related questions which make basis of judgement, consultation and expertise for the above two fields. The matrices generally encountered for analysis are urine [34], hair, nails, vitrous humour etc. The most important biosample used for analytical purposes is Blood. It is a liquid connective tissue of the body composed of different kinds of blood cells suspended in a fluid called plasma. Blood (plasma, serum) is one of the best choices for quantitative and qualitative measurements of drugs of interest because pharmacological or toxicological effects correlate more effectively with their concentrations in blood. [42] Another important biological sample is Urine which is a widely used specimen employed for screening, identification and testing of unknown drugs, forms in high amount, readily available, easy to collect and contains much useful information about the major metabolic functions of the body. [43] Taking Forensic concept in postmortem cases if the positive finding of drug occurs in urine shows that the detected substance or its parent compound might be present in the body some time before death [48] A next alternative to the blood and urine specimen found is Oral fluid for their applications in therapeutic and toxicological drug monitoring [54] When analytical studies get concern with long duration of exposure to the detection window Hair could be as a best biological matrix for the identification and analysis of drugs. It is supposed that drugs or chemicals enter in to hair by passive diffusion from blood capillaries into growing cells and the mechanisms of substance incorporation, analytical methods, result interpretation and practical applications of hair analysis has been well reviewed showing practical utility of hair analysis. [62] Except from all the above given matrices one very precise and rarely encountered biological sample is Vitreous Humor. Its a fluid found between the lens and retina of the eye proved to be the best choice for analytical examinations as it is relatively well isolated and protected from putrefaction. Two different fatality cases were reported where the extraction of drugs is done from Vitreous humor. One case has been reported of citalopram fatality where the extraction of drug is done from Vitreous humor yeilding concentration of citalopram (SSRI) less than 0.04mg/L and in second case venlafaxine fatality is reported where postmortem analysis revealed the concentrations of Fluoxetine (SSRI) and its metabolite Norfluoxetine as 5.2 mg/l and 2.2mg/l respectively. [64] Other than these specimens, body tissues like liver [71], cerebrospinal fluid etc. canalso encounter for toxic and therapeutic drug monitoring biological matrices. Techniques for Sample Preparation Several methods have been published for the determination of one or more antidepressants in biological fluids for therapeutic monitoring or for toxicological purposes. For making biological samples suitable for analytical purposes some treatments should be given to overcome the matrix effects such that the other materials should not interfere with the analytical separation that is the extractability of the analytes in the sample inturn the results of the analysis. [96] These kinds of techniques are rapidly gaining acceptance in bioanalytical applications to reduce both time and labor required to produce bioanalytical results. Thus we can say that these methods give a high selectivity and sensitivity over a wide dynamic range and contribute in formulating very fine detection techniques. Some Commonly Prescribed New Generation Antidepressant Drugs and their Metabolites Several new antidepressants that inhibit the Serotonin (SERT) and Norepinephrine transporters (NET) have been consistently use for therapeutic purposes. [108] are showing below. Sertraline is an effective and highly utilized SSRIs group of drug and ââ¬Å"its principle metabolite is desmethylsertraline.â⬠[41] Another SSRIs group of Antidepressant drug, Fluoxetine has been used worldwide in the therapy of major depression. (3) ââ¬Å"It is primarily metabolized via N-demethylation by the [117] Citalopram is a selective and potent serotonin reuptake inhibitor. [78] Another very important group of Antidepressant drug is SNRIs which includes drugs like Venlafaxine which inhibits serotonin, noradrenaline, and to a lesser extent dopamine reuptake. [39] In the majority of published analytical methods for determination of Antidepressant drugs, gas chromatography and high-performance liquid chromatography, in combination to different kinds of colums operating under different separation conditions, mobile phases and detectors has been used. These were tried to review in the table given below. With high-performance liquid chromatography the analysis is done by using different kinds of detectors like Fluorescence detector, UV detector, Mass detectors etc. For ex. a high-performance liquid chromatographic method is described for the determination of serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) in human plasma where Fluorescence detector was used. [140] A survey of most recent multiresidue analytical methods developed for the determination of different kinds of Antidepressant drugs in different types of biological test matrices with their specific cleanup procedures including the choice of mobile phase, stationary phase, detector system and validation data is summarized in the tabular form below. TABLE Abbreviations:APCI atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation, ESI eletrospray ionisation, LLE liquid-liquid extraction, LOD limitation of detection, LOQ limit of quantification, SIM single ion monitoring, SPE solid-phase extraction, SRM selected reaction monitoring , ESI electron spray ionization, UV ultraviolet, FD fluorescence detector, LC_TMS liquid chromatography tandom mass spectrometry, LC_MS, GC_MS gas chromatography mass spectrometry, RP-HPLC reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography. Thus, this table is framed for the comparative study of the major analytical approaches used in the detection and identification of Antidepressant Drugs and their metabolites in different biological matrices in order to develop the new methods with the aim to increase the sample throughput and to improve the quality of analytical methods. Thus, analytical methods for the detection of ADs and their metabolites in biological matrices are of interest in the field of forensic toxicology which involves the analysis of drugs and poisons in biological specimens and interpretation of the results to be applied in a court of law. Several analytical methods have been developed for analysis of these antidepressants in biological matrices. These methods provide a good precision and accuracy over the entire analytical range and allowing the development of very rapid and efficient analytical methods by using newer kind of analytical techniques. Conclusion: As the subject of Antidepressants toxicity is evolving, newer methods for their analysis are also evolving. However, some classes of Antidepressants drugs are less toxic and well tolerated but can lead to Toxic or Fatal Drug interaction. The research in this field is very active and results in a large number of papers published every year. Therefore they may be encountered in many Clinical and Forensic cases. Therefore, this review is mainly aimed to target latest analytical and instrumental methods used for detection and characterization of Antidepressant drugs and their metabolites in biological test matrices in turn focus on their toxic as well as therapeutic aspects which would be definitely prove to be helpful in future research and still there is lots of work required in this area as its prescription rate and toxicity is evolving day by day all over the world and by using non-destructive and sophisticated newer instrumental techniques we can also built a new strategy of examina tion and investigation for the drugs of interest. However, in this study, a decision about whether a studys findings are positive or negative cannot always be based strictly on the primary outcome measure. Future trials should also consider, using different kinds of detecting techniques and methods which would allow for easier comparison and interpretation of results across studies as the subject is of global concern and despite the success of such methods there is a continuing need for sustained innovations. Thus, future work in this area will definitely prove to be a promising from both clinical as well as from forensic prospect.

Bill Gates Richest Man In The World Commerce Essay
Bill Gates Richest Man In The World Commerce Essay Bill Gates is the chairman of the software Company Microsoft and he is one of the worlds richest men in the world according to Forbes. With Paul Allen, they founded Microsoft in 1970s. Gates oversaw the invention and marketing of the MS-DOS operating system, the Windows operating system interface, Internet Explorer browser and other popular computer products. During the 1990s, due to Microsoft stock price rise, it made Gates the world wealthiest man, his wealth has at times exceeded $75 billion, making Gates a popular symbol of the ascendant computer-geek of the late 20th century. However in June 2006, Gates announced that he would work on part time basis by July 2008. He mentioned he would remain chairman of the Microsoft board while focusing on his charitable foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. (Bill Gates Biography 2006) How a Geek Changed the World The biggest business channel of Indian media NDTV Profit arranged a talk show with Bill Gates and the most successful business executive of Asia Narayana Murthy. When a businessman from the audience asked Bill Gates the secret of success the great tycoon presented a five-point master formula of success. (Bill Gates Tells the Secret of His Success 2006) Find Your Passion It is almost impossible to be successful in anything without passion, passion generates focus. Bill Gates has a huge passion for computer and software. When he was studying in Lakeside School, he fell in love with the computer there and surpassed the knowledge of his teacher within a week. He wrote his first program when he was 13. According to Albert Einstein genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration. But without passion, its very difficult to get self-motivated and work hard. When we realize our hidden passion, the work becomes fun and we will enjoy it more and more. Make Yourself Intelligence Bill Gates also mentioned that success depends on our intelligence. Different people have different level of intelligence however most people think intelligence like a physical strength which all people cant be equal in it. It is true however physical strength can be developed, this also applies with intelligence. We can develop intelligence by reading books, watching documentary shows, getting general knowledge from the internet, socializing or arranging a debate, or practice memorizing for instance. Be Open and Honest with Your Work Being honest is important whether it is in business or relationship. Deceiving causes damage in human relations and our progress. Try to be sincere in everything such as efforts, relations and business policies. Honesty is the best policy is a really wise saying. Bill has his quality of integrity so that he has a long term partners in business. He also has a very good family relationship, one of them is with his wife Melinda. Research has also proved that integrity is also good for health as it prolongs ones life span. Create A Good Team Having a team of intelligent people is important to succeed in business. The motto of modern business world is combine and succeed. There are two types of teams: partnership and assistance. Even the big companies are doing joint venture or partnership to become stronger to face competition. For a single person it is very hard to develop nowadays. If we arent up for a partnership, at least we have to have a team of intelligent people to progress fast. Bill Gates himself understood the value of a good team when he was just a high school student. He teamed up with Paul Allen to find a company to sell traffic counter to state government and help his schools payroll system computerize. While in Harvard University he met his later business partner Steve Ballmer. Later he with Paul Allen and Monte Davidoff wrote the original Altair Basic interpreter for the Altair 8800, the first successful personal computer Good Leadership Our team will be motivated in working if we are able to provide good leadership. For a businessman, his office is like a home and his team is like his family. He shares his happiness and sorrows and keeps motivating them time to time to be better and achieve the targets. Giving them proper punishment and rewards will keep his team disciplined and united and lead them to big success. He always share his gains with his staffs by giving promotions or bonuses. THOMAS ALVA EDISON Inventor of Practical Electric Bulb I have not failed. Ive just found 10,000 ways that wont work The Wizard of Menlo Park Thomas Alva Edison, with only three months of formal education he was successfully became one of the greatest inventors and industrial leaders in history. Edisons major innovation was the first industrial research lab, which was built in Menlo Park, New Jersey. It was built with the funds from the sale of Edisons quadruplex telegraph. Edison greatest invention was the first practical electric light bulb. He also build the first electrical power distribution company. Not only those, he also invented phonograph and make improvements to the telegraph, telephone and motion picture technology. Edison was also good in doing business. He invented important new devices, as well as created companies worldwide for the manufacture and sale of his inventions. Edison was also a ruthless businessman who fought hard to compete with his competitors. One of the most notorious examples of his competitive vigor were the lengths he went to discredit Nicola Teslas Alternating Current system, which is the system of electrical distribution in use today. (Thomas Edison American Inventor 1996) Edisonian Approach: Trial and Errors There are several techniques that Edison used to achieve his success: Focus Your Energy The way to increase the power of anything is to focus our energy and concentration to a single point. He knew that with focus, effort and absolute determination, he could achieve what he wanted to achieve, even when all the odds were against him. By focusing your mind on a creative, you will develop your creative ability and your thinkingà will uncover amazing new solutions. Work On Ideas That Are Being Worked On By Others It is clear that Edison didnt really invent the electric light bulb. However, his contribution to the perfection of this device is really impressing. Documenting Thomas Edison compiled over 3500 notebooks detailing his ideas and experiments and wrote his thoughts onto over four million pages of notes during his lifetime. Its true that all the great creative minds have been writers, note bookers who record their observations, thoughts and ideas. Writing our ideas down gives us massive encouragement to creative thinking and we should begin immediately to apply this most simple of Edisons creative thinking techniques. Experimental Feedback Thomas Edison applied his creative thinking, putting it to the test through trial and experimentation. He knows the only way to increase knowledge was through experience and experience was gained through experiment. By experimenting, Edison could investigate what happened when he did a certain thing in a certain way with a specific set of tools. He could investigate cause and effect, action and reaction. He could then change the tools slightly and notice how those changes affected the experimental results. And such is the creative life. Have idea Test idea Note result Tweak idea Test tweaked idea Note result continue as necessary. A marketer may have a creative idea for a marketing campaign. She has to put it into action and do a test campaign to know whether it is as good an idea as she hopes. The results come back in. The idea will be tweaked to see whether the results can be improved on subsequent tests. Each test gives vital new information on the worth of this marketing id ea. Depending on the results that are generated the idea will be dismissed or put into wide spread use. Feedback is essential to the creative process of improving upon existing and new ideas. Systems and Teams/Mastermind Alliance Thomas Edison was aware that when it came to creativity, two heads were better than one. Thomas Edison knew that when it came to creative thinking, two heads were better than one. He was a master at organizing and utilizing the creative abilities and talents of others in very focused creative pursuits and projects. Edisons dynamic and forceful character galvanized the enthusiastic young team of bright minds that he attracted to his Menlo Park Invention Factory. You can see that Bill Gates has done a similar thing at Microsoft employing the brightest young minds to work on his team. Companies like Google follow the same principle. By working with a team of creative people you can exponentially increase and improve your creative output. (Wily Walnut 2008) ALBERT EINSTEIN Father of Modern Physics The important thing is not to stop questioningà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦ Never lose a holy curiosity Father of Relativity Albert Einstein developed a theory about the relationship of mass and energy. The formula, E=mc[2], is probably the most famous outcome from Einsteins special theory of relativity. The formula says energy (E) equals mass (m) times the speed of light (c) squared. In other words, it means mass is just one form of energy. Since the speed of light squared is a large number (186,000 miles per second)[2], a small amount of mass can be converted to a phenomenal amount of energy. Or, if theres a lot of energy available, some energy can be converted to mass and a new particle can be created. Nuclear reactors, for instance, work because nuclear reactions convert small amounts of mass into large amounts of energy. (Mary Bellis) Einstein also explains the Theory of Relativity. Relativity explains the way an object appears to be relative to an observer. You can understand this if you consider yourself in a car, observing other cars. Imagine you are observing a car travelling at 20à km/h. If your car is stationary, then the other cars speed relative to you is 20à km/h. However if you are travelling alongside the car also doing 20à km/h, then the other car seems to be stationary compared to you. Its speed relative to you is zero. (Einsteins Scientific Achievements 2005) Never Stop Being Curious There are several ways how Einsteins mind works: Behave like a child while learning, Be curious about everything what you learn. Children are curious. They are like a blank paper, waiting to be filled with knowledge and experiences. They dont have predetermined expectations clouding their judgment. Children absorb the world around with an open mind driven by sheer curiosity. Also curiosity can uncover the truth, All that seems obvious in life is not necessarily true.à A curious person discover the truth themselves without taking someones word straightaway. It is more satisfying and convincing when we see the facts itself rather than hearing from someone. Create Mind Maps, Draw some pictures and colour them. Mind mapping is about writing down a central idea and thinking up new and related ideas which spread out from the centre. By concentrating on the central ideas written down in our own words, and then searching for branches out and links between the ideas, we are mapping knowledge in a way which will help us understand and remember new information. Day Dreaming: Dream at least for 5 min daily. Many people assumed daydreaming is an act of laziness. But it has also been able to produce many popular artistic careers such as a music composer, novelist, or a film maker who do a lot of creative thinking and develop new ideas. When a person is thinking or fantasizing about his unfulfilled wishes, desires, all that for which he is passionate about, he gets carried away by them and starts day-dreaming, says a well known psychologist Dr Aruna Broota. d. Use your right part of your Brain: Right part of the brain has the ability for creative thinking. The right brain functions are all about visualization, imagination and looking at things from a larger perspective. The right brain are designed to promote imaginative and creative thinking. Right brain games are incidentally a lot of fun, this is an example of fun activities that help us loosen up and get fresh perspective on things. Most of the time, we focus on a problem and keep thinking on the same lines, whereas what is needed is to be looked at from different perspective. (Einsteins Secret Revealed: Tap the Genius in You 2008) 2. Comparison between those three a. Bill Gates Method Advantages It cant be denied that one key aspect to Bill Gates success is passion. Having passion in what we are doing is a key to success that is often overlooked. But I know that passion is essential to achieve any kind of long lasting success. If we dont have passion, everything we do will produce only average result because we never enjoy doing them. People who have passion in what they are doing, they will never give up, since they have no reason to give up, no matter what their circumstances might be. Information Technology changes rapidly, we need to keep ourselves updated by reading books for instance. Read as much as possible, It wont hurt you. Why is reading so important? With this skill you have access to all of the accumulated knowledge from the past and the present. One of the key successes of Bill Gates is being honest of what we are doing. Nowadays, being honest in business will always mean that you will get better business in the long run. In business, being honest means that we will keep everybody informed regarding our true state and objectives. The advantage of being honest is not only this will set the appropriate amount of expectations, but will also clear things, whether the person is ready to do business with us. Most of Bill Gates work are done in a team. There are several benefits from working in a team such as more people will generate more ideas; we will have larger range of skills; parallel working will enhance speed; and people in a team can support and encourage each other. Last but not least, being a good leader needs skills and practice. A good leader is not about commanding people around but rather the ability to influence his characteristics to the team he is working with. An example of characteristics of good leadership will be discipline and self confidence. A good leader will know that his characteristics are being observed and followed by those around him. A good leadership will increase the work productivity and loyalty of staffs. Disadvantages Unfortunately, being honest in business isnt an easy job. It is still hard for people to estimate whether a business service or product is worth paying for, especially when it is expensive. We will find people turning away from us, as they learn the truth. But still, being honest is a good thing. For example, if people keep ignoring your sincere offer, it means that they wont appreciate your work. It also means that they have a very high expectation now and in the future. When we speak honestly and find the right customer, the chances are he/she will listen. He/she will trust you and agree to work on your conditions. The biggest benefit of speaking honestly is that we will enjoy working with someone who enjoys our work. Working in a team sometimes can be frustrating and unproductive, such as office politics, large number of people working in a small task, conflicts between team member, and also members with larger personalities can harm the confidence of the quieter team member. However this can be tackled by hiring the right person and good leadership. b. Edison Method Advantages One of Edison philosophy is to monotask, focus all our attention or energy to one single thing. We never can pay full attention to two jobs at once, for example when we are writing while having a conversation, we are switching our attention back and forth between those two quickly. We are juggling and when we juggle tasks, our work deteriorates and takes longer to complete because of switching tasks. So by monotasking, we can improve the quality of work and the amount of time spent. We learn more from failure rather than success. It took Edison approximately ten thousands experiments to figure out the perfect element for the electric light bulb. There was a lot of learning to go through. There is no such knowledge in books. He simply never gives up trying, failing and learning. We must actively seek out failure and learn from it. We shouldnt be afraid of getting anything wrong. Failure is our friend. Every failure is simply an experiment. Experiments are set up to see what results occur and to learn from doing them. Disadvantages Some people are good at multitasking, and they can complete tasks faster with the same quality of result. Applying monotasking on these kind of people will deteriorate their efficiency and energy. By multitasking, those energy can be fully utilized to complete tasks. We also should know when to stop, give up and move on. If we dont enjoy the job we are doing or unsatisfied, stop for a while and review it. We shouldnt be wasting our time on something we dont enjoy or feel right doing. Another example is when we are injured and we should be taking a week off and miss an important match this week, we give up that match and get well soon so that we can play on the following match. So its important to know when to give up otherwise we or somebody else will get hurt. This also applies in relationship; maybe giving up a relationship is for our best interest. Albert einstein Advantages Being curious in life can bring happiness. Curiosity is about learning for ourselves and sharing what we have learnt. We can be curious about anything, even the things we have already known. Curiosity is an important aspects of a genius. Almost all inventors and great people, they are all curious people. Being curious can make our mind active, we always ask questions and search for answers; it increases the awareness of our mind for new ideas, because without curiosity, we wont look further of those particular new ideas; and we will have a very exciting life because new things always attract our attention Einstein always encourage us to utilize and train our right brain. People with right-side brain dominance are tend to be more creative in things such as painting or music composing. Whereas, people with left-sided brain dominance deal with reality and use less imaginations. According to a scientist at Middle Tennessee State University, people with right brain dominance tend to think outside the box. This is helpful with projects and problem solving. Disadvantages There is a time when being curious can lead to inefficiency. When we are curious on a lot of small unproductive things such as checking blog comments, refreshing facebook page, keep an eye on our watchlists in ebay several times per day at random intervals. And we are aware that we do this far more frequently than we needed to. Curiosity killed the cat is an expression that means dont be nosy because we could get hurt. This expression is based on the fact that cats are nosy and mischievous and often find themselves is dangerous situations, such as being stuck in a tree or running in front of traffic. Yes, curiosity can lead to nosyness. It is not shocking when people who labeled themselves as friends, but when things go bad for us, all they want is the gossip. And the worst things about it is that most of these nosy friends spread it to others and they just dont care about us and our feeling. Critical reflection What I have learnt from Bill Gates, is that I have to have passion for everything I do to achieve success. In studies I have to learn to love everything I am studying. If I dont enjoy them, then I will fail or barely pass the units. Also I dont have to be the first to win. Computer has already existed when Bill Gates were born, but he was able to make the device better and bring their products to the masses than anyone else in the industry. Microsoft was simply better at executing a business plan, and thats why Microsoft software is now the industry standard. This also applies to Edison, he didnt invent the first electric light bulb, he made them perfect and produced the first commercially practical electric bulb. So when I see things has been working properly, I shouldnt stop thinking about them, what I should do is to think whether I can make things better. To be successful, I also have to know how to do business. Being genius is useless if I cant make money out of it. Bill Gates quoted, If you cant make it good, at least make it look good, well the purpose of making it look good is that he can sell the product to people and make money. What I learn from Edison is not to fear failure. Failure can be a beautiful experience, because it develop my courage. And theres a saying, What doesnt kill you, makes you stronger, every failure as long as I learn from it, it will make me a better person. The best way for describing a failure is by realizing that failure is an event, not a person. For example, if I tried something and fail 20 times, I wouldnt be a failure, but I am a person who has experienced 18 failures. So if theres something I want to do and unsuccessful yet, I wont stop trying. Remember, the only people who never fail are those who never try. However there should be a clear line on where we are taking it too far and we have to stop trying. For example, I have been in love with a girl for a year, she keeps saying no when I asked her out. There was a time when she was so upset because I keep calling her. Also because of this, I lost focus at work, I kept thinking of her, I started drinking. In this case, giving up and moving on arent bad ideas. This is for my happiness and hers. I gain experience by making mistakes. I dont drown by falling in water, I drown by staying there. So lets start today by defying failure, learning from our mistakes, and forging ahead. Edison also encourages us to do tasks one at a time. For me, it is time to step back and take a look at things I am trying to do. I pick my first priority and stick with it until it is totally accomplished. I might find that multitasking such as doing 3 things at once, I could really accomplish things faster. But then I stepped back and looked at what I have done and I saw plenty of small mistakes here and there. I need to learn how to focus on task at hand. Doing more isnt always better if I havent done it accurately. It just means I have accomplished more jobs but havent finished any of them.

Symbols and Symbolism Essay: Color as a Tool in Heart of Darkness :: Heart Darkness essays
Color as a Tool of Symbolism in Heart of Darknessà à Color is used very effectively as a tool of symbolism in Heart of Darkness. Colors, especially black and white, are used to symbolize evil (black) and good (white). Other colors are also used, although less often than black and white. Throughout the story, people are thought to have white souls or black souls depending on their innate ââ¬Å"goodnessâ⬠or ââ¬Å"badnessâ⬠or the role they are fulfilling at the time. The color of a personââ¬â¢s soul is often contrasted to the color of their skin. A black- souled, white-skinned person is thought to be evil and dishonest. ââ¬Å"I met a white man in such an unexpected elegance of getupâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Conrad p.21). This demonstrates how a white man was not expected to be a good person. Elegance of dress was unexpected because the man was white. In comparison, a white-souled, black-skinned person is thought to be truthful and full of integrity. ââ¬Å"An athletic black belonging to some coast tribe and educated by my poor pre decessorâ⬠¦.thought all the world of himself.â⬠(Conrad p.45). People are described as black with hatred regardless of skin color. This is further evidence of black being used synonymously with evil. Black isnââ¬â¢t just used to describe evil people. ââ¬Å"Often far away, I thought of these two, guarding the door of Darkness, knitting black wool as for a warm pallâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Conrad p. 14.) The symbolism of black wool at the door of Darkness is clearly pointing to evil, and further supports black as evil. Heath 2 Colors other than black and white are used to describe moods and attitudes past the basic good and evil. Red signifies industry. ââ¬Å"There was a vast amount of red - good to see at any time because one knows that some real work is done in there.â⬠(Conrad p.13). Yellow is seen as a cowardly color. ââ¬Å"I was going into the yellow. Dead in the center.â⬠(Conrad p.13). Pale denotes Death. It is also used this way in the Bible, ââ¬Å"the Pale ho rse and his rider Deathâ⬠, Revelations 6:8. ââ¬Å"She came forward, all in black, with a pale head, floating towards me in the dusk. She was in mourning. It was more than a year since his deathâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Conrad p. 72-73). The use of color is effective in the story for a variety of reasons. First, it is easy to understand.

Aruba :: Free Descriptive Essay About A Place
Aruba Arubaââ¬â¢s culture is a collection of values, beliefs, and traditions from several nations over hundreds of years. The language, architecture, schooling, language, festivities, and folklore have made the Aruban natives the people they are today. The native population has ethnic roots in Arawak, African, and European peoples. This is evident in the local foods, architecture, celebrations, and languages. There is also a mix of expatriates from Europe, the Caribbean, and Latin America working in various industries on the island. Culturally, Aruba has strong ties to Holland; itââ¬â¢s colonial occupier and present-day partner in the Netherlands kingdom. The official language of the island is Dutch, seen on street signs, government documents, and several local newspapers. Most people of Aruba, particularly those in the tourism business, speak English . There are four languages spoken overall there and they are Dutch, English, Spanish, and Papiamento. Papiamento is not a dialect but a language that is evidence to the many influences of older languages and Arubaââ¬â¢s culture and traditions. It has traces of Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, French and local Indian languages. It is a language that began in Curacao in the 1500ââ¬â¢s in an attempt to help slave owners communicate with their slaves. Itââ¬â¢s a comparatively easy language to learn with a limited vocabulary and a spicy rhythm that makes it ââ¬Å"funâ⬠. The challenging aspect of Papiamento is the importance of proper emphasis on the right syllable. If this is done incorrectly another meaning to the word intended may be interpreted. Some examples of Papiamento are as follows; Very good is Hopi bon, Good Morning is Bon dia, Good Afternoon is Bon tardi, Good Evening is Bon nochi, and Have a good day is Pasa bon dia. Even with a limited knowledge of Spanish an d French, one can find similarities and traces of the two within these few phrases . The education system of Aruba has established the same standards to those employed in the Netherlands. Teachers communicate with their students primarily in Dutch. English is required of students by the fourth grade and many become fluent in their early adult years. Spanish, French, and German are three other languages offered to students while attending school. On the island, school facilities include a secondary education, a teacherââ¬â¢s college, a law school, and technical and training establishments.

How does Dickens present his views on education in hard times? :: Free Essay Writer
How does Dickens present his views on education in hard times? Hard times is set in the 1840ââ¬â¢s in the North of England. Itââ¬â¢s set at a time when Britain is changing dramatically because of the Industrial Revolution, which is mainly affecting this part of Britain. This revolution moved much of the work from the country into towns and cities, and small cramped villages were built around the factories and mills to house the workers. Dickens novel ââ¬Ëhard timesââ¬â¢ was set during this time. Dickens uses many techniques throughout the novel to show his views on education to his readers, the first of which is to create different characters, some of which contrast each other in different ways . Two of such Characters are Sissy Jupe and Bitzer. They differ in the ways they have been taught and the ways they see the education system. Bitzer is a model student, he has always strictly followed the system and been taught exactly how the system requires him to be taught. He is shown as lifeless and colourless, ââ¬Ëthe boy was so light-eyed and light-haired that the self-same rays appeared to draw out of him what little colour he ever possessed.ââ¬â¢ This gives the effect that he has been drained of life and everything else but facts. When asked, Bitzer describes a Horse as a ââ¬ËQuadrupedââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëgraminivorousââ¬â¢ and gives endless facts about the animal. Although this description is very factual and impressive, the use of long complex words and the amount of facts show that he has simply been taught these facts, and probably has never even seen a Horse. Sissy on the other hand does not understand how to factually define a Horse when asked, this is because she has been brought up with Horses all her life and they are too familiar and important to her just to be described in facts. This is one way that Dickens tries to show to his audience that this type of education is wrong, the teaching of bare facts limits the imagination of the student and a more practical way of teaching, like Sissy has had, would help the children understand the facts that they are being taught, instead of just learning them. Dickens also shows the characters of some of the staff at the school to make his views known. Mr Gradgrind is the first to be introduced, from the onset Dickens portrays him as ââ¬Ësquaredââ¬â¢ , both in his appearance and character, he reveals little about him apart from the fact he is rigid, and has little individuality. This is emphasized by the repletion of ââ¬Ësquareââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëspeakerââ¬â¢, and by this he is shown to

Prison and Facilities Offering Rehabilitation Essay
Prisoner Rehabilitation is when a criminal offender has been reformed of their criminal behavior. Many correctional facilities offer several different types of rehabilitation programs to the offenders that are housed within the facility; unfortunately with many states seeing budget cuts these types of rehabilitation programs are being cut. With the amount of facilities offering rehabilitation programs are dwindling and the amount of prisoners increasing this could lead to major problems in the future. Prisoner rehabilitation is a way to try and ensure that upon the offenders release that society is safe from the offenderââ¬â¢s criminal ways. Some correctional facilities offer rehabilitation programs like drug and alcohol rehab, religion, and anger management and that is just a few (Foster, 2006). First discussed back in the Twentieth Century although it is believed to of been used before than. Rehabilitation has never been the soul reason for the incarceration of a person. Prison official were not able to give a defined and clear method of rehabilitation (Foster, 2006). Scientific penology was a major role in defining and conducting structured thoughts and scientific studies that can be utilized through rehabilitation (Foster, 2006). Rehabilitation programs have an effect on prisoners, prisons, and society in general in different ways. Prison inmates who have these types of programs available it gives them something constructive to do with their time; when you are incarcerated believe it or not but all you have is time to kill. These types of rehabilitation programs can have a positive impact on the inmateââ¬â¢s lives and in turn on society. If an inmate can complete rehabilitation program while incarcerated and change their lifestyle when released it benefits not only the inmate but also helps society. These programs can help offenders by building their self worth so that they can believe they deserve better than a prison life and let them know that there is something more out there other than the prison life. Some say that these types of programs donââ¬â¢t work and in some cases they donââ¬â¢t but in some theyà do work and can give an inmate a real chance to survive outside of the prison walls without reverting back to their criminal ways. The major problem that I see with the rehabilitation programs would be the fact that they are being cut and facilities that offer these programs are being closed. I have a very close family friend that is mandated to go through rehabilitation program from the courts yet they are sent to a facility where the rehabilitation program is not even offered due to budget cuts. The budget cuts and closing of facilities are only going to add to the over crowding population of inmates within the corrections facilities. So my recommendation is that these types of programs need to be offered at every prison and should but be affected by budget cuts. Reference: Foster, B. (2006). Corrections: The fundamentals. Locke and Hobbes and Their Philosophical Views
When one thinks of the great philosophers of the 16th and 17th centuries, the names John Locke and Thomas Hobbes automatically come to mind.à Both men were instrumental in the philosophical world.à Both were educated at Oxford and both chose a self-imposed exile to Holland because of their political views. On the state of nature, John Locke believed that God created the world and man.à Therefore, all men are equal.à No one has the right to take a life and that also applied to suicide.à He felt that all men were entitled to life, liberty, health and property.à However, he felt that government was something that took away these rights instead of insuring them.à To him, it seemed that only God was to have control of man. While Locke felt that man was better off without laws and government, Thomas Hobbes thought that it would be a complete state of confusion if this were to take place.à Without laws, people would be able to avenge any wrong that they felt was done to them.à He felt that it would leave man in a constant state of fear because there would be no safety.à Disputes would become a time of violence according to Hobbes. John Locke thought that a world without government would return man to his simpler, more rightful place.à This idea derives from the idea that no one man has the right to be in charge of another.à With the act of government and enforcement of laws, there are people who would have to do the enforcing of the laws.à Unfortunately, this would pit man against man and that would go against the natural order that should exist. Hobbes ideas of government seem contradictory.à In one sense he believed in a government with absolute authority, but then he states that man should not obey a law if it takes away his dignity and honor.à Hobbes felt that no one should even question whether one should obey authority of his/her government and that for anyone to be able to choose which laws that would be obeyed was insanity and would lead to complete confusion. Lockeââ¬â¢s thoughts on the rights of each individual is that of self-ownership.à In other words, an individual was completely responsible for himself/herself and answered only to God.à He did believe in self-discipline and strict moral character.à He thought that even the monarch had to answer to God.à So he thought that all people should have equal rights and all rights should be afforded to all people. Since Hobbes was a Calvinist, he believed that man was inherently evil while Locke believed that it was society that was evil.à Hobbes believed that men needed something to dictate his behavior.à That is why he believed in a strong government which allowed certain civil rights, but not others.à He also believed that it was possible for some to enjoy more rights than others because of their behavior. Both men also had strong feelings on the right to revolt or rebel.à Locke felt that one of the true reasons that it would be right to rebel against a government was if that government was not a legitimate government.à The way that people could tell that a government was not a legitimate government was to look at how it believed in the rights of the individual.à If the government believed that it was right for a man to be enslaved or took away other rights that others shared, then that government should encounter a rebellion of its people. Hobbes on the other hand believed that revolt and rebellion would lead to mayhem.à He sighted that the French revolution ended in many useless executions of working class people because of a rebellion against the government.à He agreed that to change the government, one should change it by changing the laws and not by rebellion. Rene` Descartes was a philosopher who was known as the father of modern philosophy.à He was called that because he used much from science and math.à He believed that the body represented the physical world and the mind represented the metaphysical.à Descartes felt that if one was out of sort then the other would be as well.à He felt that everything in the natural world had to work together and so should the body and the mind.à The body was the physical organs while the mind was composed of the brain and the neurological system.à It was quite possible for a dysfunction of the brain to allow something in the body to not work properly. Locke, Hobbes, and Descartes gave great contributions to the world of philosophy.à They were in many ways different.à However they did cause the world to stop and think and not just take things at face value.
